The bond market just sent its loudest signal in two decades, and it's happening just hours before the Federal Reserve makes its move.
The U.S. 10-year Treasury yield has spiked to its highest level since 2007. This isn't just a number; it's the cost of money for the entire global economy being repriced in real-time, as headlines warn that central banks are turning hawkish again, spooked by the recent oil shock.
The market is front-running the Fed. Tomorrow's interest rate decision is the catalyst, and traders are not waiting for the announcement. Polymarket has the odds of a rate hike tomorrow at a staggering eighty-eight percent. This surge in yields is putting immense pressure on anything considered a risk asset.
And you can see the damage. Bitcoin is down about two percent on the week, testing support near seventy-six thousand. In equities, the Nasdaq is down about three percent on the month, and former high-flyers like Nvidia are down over eight percent this week alone. When the cost of borrowing goes up this fast, growth-oriented assets get hit first.
My read is this spike in yields reveals a major divergence between risk pricing in the bond market versus the stock market's volatility index. I'm tracking this on The VIX Pricing Error page on korra dot finance. All eyes are on the Fed tomorrow — this bond sell-off has left them with very little room to surprise to the dovish side.
